Sunlightsquare launch their brand new Latin Combo project, unleashing a scorching album ripe with stunning authentic Latin-Jazz grooves titled ‘Havana Central’. Oozing with a dramatic tapestry of sun-kissed percussive rhythms, firey brass and infectious salsa keys, ‘Havana Central’ is an audio ticket to Latin shores! Sporting an array of feel good original pieces, SLC dish up party flavours including ‘Para Guarachar’, ‘Havana Central’ and ‘Chan Chan Boogaloo’ and ‘El Pollo De Carlitos’ and the Jazz frenzy of ‘Así Toda La Vida’ along with a helping of sophisticated laid back cuts including ‘Bebidas Para Ti, Y Ron Para Mi’ and the ‘Toca Otra Vez’. In addition there’s a stunning trombone led cover of Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’, along with their current single smash, a Salsa-centric cover of The Jackson Sister’s classic ‘I Believe In Miracles’, which has been championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles among many.
The Sunlightsquare Latin Combo project sees band Leader Claudio Passavanti embrace his love for Cuban music and along with the help of local producer Antonio Rodríguez Sr. was able to book a session at the historical Studio 4 of Radio Rebelde in Cuba (The station was set up in 1958 by Che Guevara). The album was recorded through the hurricanes Gustav, Hannah and Ike. Sometimes there wasn't enough power for the lights so they had to record by candlelight, which certainly added to the atmosphere! The Latin Combo project features the crème de la crème of musicians from the Latin world of music including: Lazaro Antonio Rodríguez (Toni) Bongo, Vocals); Giovanni Imparato (Congas); Ignacio R. "El Chispa" Cervantes (Bass); Rayhner Lasserie (Timbale); Luis Amaurys Leyva Suárez (Tres); Yanko Pizaco & Alexander Valdés Sarduy (Trumpet:);Yamil Rivero Cárdenas & Joel Sagó Bell (Trombone) and backing vocals from Danaily Hernandes Del Valle, Rayhner Lasserie, Lazaro Antonio Rodríguez, Tasita D’Mour and Claudio Passavanti himself.
Sunlightsquare are a multi genre crossing band, fusing Latin, nu-jazz, soul, reggaeton, funk and Salsa inspired music to create beautiful innovative grooves, branding them as one of the most exciting acts to spawn from the London Jazz scene in recent times!.. They first started recording together in 2004, releasing their debut album ‘Urban Session’ in 2006 on their own label Sunlightsquare Records. This hugely talented collective is the brainchild of Italian pianist Claudio Passavanti, who has culled together a team of world-class musicians and vocalists. 2009 saw the launch of their fantastic album ‘Urban Latin Soul’ which reached great acclaim, topped off with a sell-out album launch show at London’s Jazz Cafe. Their singles, including a cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Pastime Paradise’ (ft Z Star) & the latin fuelled ‘Amuyada’ (Ft Joy Malcom), both of which feature on the album, and a cover of the Earth Wind & Fire Classic ‘Let’s Groove’.
